about

Indie electronic rock opera based on Homer's The Odyssey. Influenced by modern events. Part 1 of 2. Artist recorded and produced.

Part one of a series, Ulysses I is a music project telling the story of The Odyssey in a way that illuminates the modern crises in the Mediterranean.

As a producer and composer, San Merci invoked thematic Greek story-telling as inspiration for this album. “I read The Iliad and The Odyssey some time ago and have been captivated by those stories ever since. I think what strikes me most about them is the timelessness of the characters and situations”, the artist remarked. “If you remove the trappings of the ancient Mediterranean world, I think what you are left with are human emotions that are eternal - hate, love, fear, pride, homesickness.”

Ulysses I, a synth soundscape peppered with audio bites from conflicts touching the Mediterranean, propels Homer's descriptions of the war-torn region to a new age. While writing this album, San Merci spent time on and pulled inspiration from the Greek isle of Chios, the legendary birthplace of Homer, and home to one of Europe's biggest Syrian refugee populations. This in turn influenced the composition process behind this project. San Merci said, “I've interspersed audio clips from the Syria conflict and the various problems that region faces along with stories from the The Odyssey. If Ulysses were to undertake his great voyage today, these are some of things he might see, feel, and hear.” Acting as a conduit from the past to the present, the album is a musical journey leading the listener to understand the universality of the human condition. San Merci draws inspiration from David Bowie and other artists who accentuate the importance of thematic album crafting.

Prior to releasing Ulysses I, San Merci, a Washington D.C. native, showcased several works on Soundcloud, Bandcamp, and YouTube, including an EP coincidentally titled The EP. In addition to writing his songs, the composer self produces all releases in his bedroom studio.
